It’s tough for someone to go through dealing with the loss of a loved one. Of course it was devastating when my girlfriend’s mother died. Shortly after her mom’s passing she started to realize how much she was forgetting things. Being a perfectionist, super organized and always on the ball forgetting things really started to make her feel uneasy. Forgetting an appointment or misplacing her keys again and again would throw her straight into a anxiety attack. However, she immediately thought that this forgetfulness must be from some sort of undiagnosed disease and then those thoughts would attack her… what if it’s a brain tumor or cancer? What if I die? Why can’t I get this Panic away from me?
As time went by these thoughts became obsessive and she began feeling scatter-brained, unsure of herself and unable to concentrate on anything. Her anxiety attacks would send her spiralling out of control because of all the irrational, obsessive thoughts. On the internet for several hours she would be trying to find out which disease sounded like hers. She was certain she was going crazy. She wouldn’t talk about her anxiety attacks with any friends or family believing that they would all think she’s going crazy too. She was scared.
Death is a big tragedy and grieving is normal and takes time. It’s not uncommon to feel forgetful, overwhelmed or scatter-brained. She became obsessed with running to the doctor each time she’d forget something because her mind couldn’t think logically at the time and her obsessive thoughts seemed totally normal. She asked her physician to perform many different tests but he concluded that she had General Anxiety Disorder, surprised but a tiny relieved, she didn’t know how to stop the anxiety on her own.
The fear of dying was the root of her anxiety, especially since having her mom die. Having a fear of something sets off anxiety or panic.
